1. Who we are
UniMatcher is an independent university discovery platform operated as a product in development. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of any university listed on this platform.
For any data-related enquiries, please contact us at: privacy@unimatch.co.uk
2. What data we collect
When you use UniMatcher, we may collect:
- Preferences: Your study area, level of study, preferred location, lifestyle preferences, budget range, and predicted grade level — entered during onboarding.
- Swipe data: Which universities you liked, skipped, or super liked, and in what order.
- Email address: Only if you voluntarily submit it via the email capture form, with your explicit consent.
- Usage data: Basic analytics such as pages visited and time spent. This is collected in aggregate and is not linked to your identity.
We do not collect your name, date of birth, phone number, or any financial information.
3. How we use your data
We use the data we collect to:
- Personalise your university match results and course recommendations
- Send you your shortlisted universities and related information if you opted in by email
- Improve the UniMatcher platform and matching algorithm
- Understand how students make university decisions (aggregated, anonymised insights only)
We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not share your individual data with universities without your explicit consent.
4. Legal basis for processing (GDPR)
Under UK GDPR, we process your data on the following legal bases:
- Consent: For email marketing and communications. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing or contacting us.
- Legitimate interests: For platform improvement and anonymised analytics, where this does not override your rights.
- Contract performance: To deliver the matching service you have requested.
5. Data storage and retention
Currently, your preference and swipe data is stored locally in your browser (localStorage) and is not transmitted to any server. It is removed when you clear your browser data or click "Start Fresh".
If you submit your email address, it is stored securely and retained until you unsubscribe or request deletion. We will not contact you more frequently than once per week.
6. Cookies
UniMatcher currently uses only essential cookies required for the platform to function (such as session state). We do not use advertising, tracking, or third-party cookies at this time.
If we introduce analytics or advertising cookies in the future, we will update this policy and request your consent via a cookie banner.
7. Your rights under UK GDPR
You have the right to:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Erasure — request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten")
- Restriction — ask us to limit how we use your data
- Portability — receive your data in a machine-readable format
- Object — object to processing based on legitimate interests
- Withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@unimatch.co.uk. We will respond within 30 days.
8. Third-party services
UniMatcher may use the following third-party services:
- Image hosting (Unsplash / Picsum): City imagery is served from third-party CDNs. These services may log your IP address when loading images.
- Hosting provider: Our platform is hosted on infrastructure that may process request logs. No personal data beyond IP address is shared.
We do not use Facebook Pixel, Google Ads, or any advertising tracking tools.
9. Children's privacy
UniMatcher is intended for users aged 16 and over, in line with UK GDPR provisions for children's data. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 16. If you believe a child has submitted data, please contact us immediately.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify registered users by email. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version.
11. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO):
